Who’s the mid-season leader for ACC Basketball Coach of the Year?

#StayHealthy and practice social distancing

Like we did with College Football, where we periodically checked in on the ACC COY race we are going to the same with College Basketball. It should have been NC State’s Dave Doeren in the fall, but the ACC media didn’t agree. Will they agree this time? Who are the contenders?

Leonard Hamilton – Florida State

Leonard Hamilton did one of the best jobs in college basketball post-pause of any program in the country. FSU came out of their pause and raced out to 5 straight wins by an average of more than 18 points before a weekend loss to Georgia Tech. The Noles are a NCAA lock, and their size, athleticism, and depth continues to be the hallmark of Florida State basketball.

Tony Bennett  – Virginia

Another season another spot at the top of the ACC standings. The players may change, but Tony Bennett again has a team in position to win the ACC. A recent seven game winning streak, landed Virginia back in the top 10 before a loss to Mike Young who is making his own strong case for ACC COY.

Mike Young – Virginia Tech

Picked to outside the top 10 of the ACC, Mike Young has Virginia Tech just a 1/2 game behind by Virginia in the ACC standings. They are the only team to defeat Villanova, and came up with a recent monster win over Virginia even after the suspension of key contributor Tyrece Radford. The Hokies are virtual locks to make the NCAAs. Keve Aluma might just be the POY in the ACC.

Leader – Mike Young

Mike Young has built up a sizeable ACC COY lead over Leonard Hamilton and Tony Bennett. No one else is remotely in the picture. The Hokies have blown past pre-season expectations and could very well win the ACC regular season title. The ACC COY award has become Mike Young’s to lose.
