2020 Proving what ACC Football Could Be.

#StayHealthy and practice social distancing.

In the latest AP and Coaches poll  the ACC has 4 teams ranked in the top 9.

#1 Clemson, #5 Notre Dame, #7 Miami, and #8/#9 is UNC. Virginia Tech comes in at #19/#18. Seven different ACC teams have been ranked so far this season if you add Pittsburgh and Louisville.

Saturday features two top 20 ACC matchups with UNC vs Virginia Tech and Clemson vs Miami.

The conference has 3 top 10 Heisman candidates.

Trevor Lawrence – Clemson, Travis Etienne – Clemson, and D’Eriq Kinh of Miami

Let me be the first to say, we know that a lot of this is due directly to the circumstances created by the COVID-19.

Notre Dame wouldn’t be in the ACC this year without it. It’s doubtful there would be 4 ACC Teams in the top 9, as the Pac 12 and Big 10 would have some teams taking those spots.

On the otherhand, even with some built in advantages in a season like this a conference can face plant. Ask the Big 12, who got embarrassed by the Sun Belt conference, and suddenly only have one top 20 team in Oklahoma State. They are 1 Cowboy loss from being totally eliminated from the playoff chase.

That said 2020 still gives a glimpse of what the ACC could look like as a football conference. Whether you like Notre Dame or not, they have had added football credibility of the ACC, but there is depth beyond that too.

We’ve already had three top 25 matchups this seasons, that didn’t feature Clemson or Notre Dame in the game – Louisville vs Miami, Louisville vs Pittsburgh, and this week North Carolina vs Virginia Tech.

Gameday has already been to four ACC games this year.

Clemson at Wake Forest, Miami at Louisville, Florida State at Miami, and Miami at Clemson.

With the Big 10 and Pac 12 set to return at the end of the month, the ACC needs to keep the momentum up. Notable Top 25 games on the horizon are Clemson vs Notre Dame on 11/14, Clemson vs Virginia Tech on 12/5, Miami vs North Carolina on 11/14, Miami vs UNC on 12/5, North Dame vs UNC on 11/27.

The ACC couldn’t build on their historically successful 2016. 2020 is providing another chance.
