ACC QUESTION of WEEK : Where does Miami stand in the ACC entering October?

After seeing the Miami Hurricanes hang over half a hundred on Florida State, it is easy and — moreover — quite reasonable to think that D’Eriq King and Rhett Lashlee have transformed the Canes, creating a very happy turn for The U.

In a pandemic football season, crazy things are likely to happen, so I don’t have a problem — intellectually — with the assertion that Miami is back. This year, it might be.

In a normal season, I would be urging caution. I would emphasize the need to withhold strong takes. However, in pandemic season, fine — let loose. Be free! In a weird year, a lot of opinions might be valid which — under more normal circumstances — might seem less advisable. I’m not going to police opinions in 2020 as much as I normally do.

So, if you think Miami is back, hey — I can see why you would think that. It’s perfectly okay.

I would only say this about Miami and its place in the ACC entering October: Florida State is really bad. If I had to weigh Saturday night’s game — was it more about Miami being great or FSU being awful? — the balance would be 50-50 at best, and maybe 60-percent Florida State being atrocious.

Yes, great teams HAMMER bad teams. Miami certainly brought the hammer to FSU. That said, Florida State is such a smoldering crater of a program that I’m not sure we can assign too much value to what the Hurricanes did.

Miami plays Clemson on Oct. 10. Let’s wait for that game. Let’s also realize that North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and the other top teams in the ACC to play each other.

Miami is one of the top five teams in the ACC with Clemson, the Irish, the Hokies, and the Tar Heels. How those five teams measure up against each other is a total mystery right now, with the exception of Clemson being the top cat. (Bulldogs are top dogs; Tigers are top cats.)

Yes, Miami’s early results are very, very promising. What does it mean in the bigger picture? We have to wait a few weeks to find out.
