Georgia Tech finds their QB, and a win in Tallahassee

Well we are only into the first weekend of ACC football, and already one thing is clear. Georgia Tech has found their quarterback of the future in true freshman Jeff Sims. Sims was a 4 star recruit and former commit to Florida State. Saturday in his first collegiate game of his career he went 23/34 for 277 yards and a TD. He added 64 yards on the ground leading the Georgia Tech offense to over 400 total yards against a pretty talented FSU defense.

Sims made a couple of bad red-zone decisions that resulted in interceptions, but Geoff Collins and company have to be thrilled overall with their QB’s performance.

Sims showed touch on the short passes, and a live arm on the deeper throws. He’s mobile, and showed plenty of poise even after getting down 10-0 with the early turnovers. He’s a quarterback the Georgia Tech program can build around.

Collins has now won 2 ACC games in a row, and beat both Miami and Florida State. The offense is light years ahead of where it was this time last year. There’s sneaky good talent at WR, and Jordan Mason is a load at RB. The defense was short-handed, but played physical and tough giving up less than 300 total yards to Florida State.

Georgia Tech is far from a finished product. They had 3 kicks get blocked today, but the transition of the program from Paul Johnson’s triple option offense took another huge step forward today.

Florida State’s Mike Norvell on the other hand got a clear picture of just how far away the Noles are from a top tier ACC team. Their offensive line struggled against a depleted Georgia Tech front, and James Blackman was under siege most of the game.

The Noles wilted in the 2nd half like they did so many times last year. Not only does Norvell have personal issues to fix, he’s got get FSU right between the ears too. There will be no quick fixes in Tallahassee.
