Virginia Tech
Justin Fuente looked like a can’t miss hire 4 years ago for Virginia Tech. He won 19 games in his first two years, but just 13 in the last two years. Fuente better not lose back to back games to Virginia either. After an 8-3 start in 2019, and with back to back shutouts of Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh, the Hokies looked primed for a strong finish. They lost their last two games to Virginia and Kentucky giving up 76 points in the process. Fuente hasn’t been terrible, but Hokie fans are getting restless for a definitive sign that the program is moving forward. An 8 or 9 win regular season would do that.
Will Go 9-2 (6-2) if:
The offense lives up to it’s potential. QB Hendon Hooker jump started the Hokies offense mid-way through 2019, and he has receiving weapons with WRs Tre’ Turner and Tayvion Robinson and TE James Mitchell. The offensive line is sneaky good, and has some NFL caliber talent. The defense even with Caleb Farley opting out has the potential to be pretty good, even if not a vintage Hokie defense. The Hokies have a chance to start the season 3-1, or 4-0 with games against Virginia, NC State, at Duke, and at UNC. They do that, and they could be off and running with every game the rest of the season winnable except probably the season finale against Clemson.
Will Go 6-5 (5-5) if:
The defense without longtime DC Bud Foster struggles during the coaching transition. 4 new defensive coaches, and now without Caleb Farley. It was terribly inconsistent defense last year either giving up less than 21 points or more than 35, with 2 shutouts, and 2 games where the opponent scored more than 40. If the defense leans towards the one that struggled to stop anyone, ACC QBs will have a field day. Virginia Tech has not had a very effective running game for awhile. Another mediocre rushing offense, could spell trouble for the Hokies. Virginia Tech avoids Notre Dame, but Clemson and road games with Louisville and UNC still are on the schedule. If the Hokies go 0-3 there, they will be looking at best a near .500 season in the ACC.
