Florida State
The Willie Taggart era at Florida State mercifully came to an end after just 21 games where he never beat Miami, Clemson, or Florida. Taggart may have turned it around at some point in the future for the Noles, but he was clearly in over his head at the current time. Florida State isn’t the type program to learn on the job. In comes Mike Norvell, who was very successful at Memphis. We’ll see if Norvell is the right fit over the next couple of years, but if he is we know what Florida State is capable of. From 2012 – 2016 Florida State was a top 5 national program. FSU doesn’t want to become a rotating turnstyle of coaches trying to recapture past glory ala their rival Miami.
Will Go 8-3 (5-3) if:
Mike Norvell’s fast-paced offense takes quickly. Louisville’s Scott Satterfield raised the bar for quick turnarounds in the ACC. There’s hope by FSU fans Norvell can do something similar. Experienced but turnover prone QB James Blackman returns. WR Tamorrian Terry and DT Marvin WIlson are back and are among the best at their position not only in the ACC, but college football. The offensive line has been a total wreck in recent years, but improved play could make the FSU offense very dangerous. Only Clemson and maybe Notre Dame look completely out of reach as wins.
Will Go 5-6 (4-6) if:
A difficult schedule gets the best of the Noles. Clemson, @Notre Dame, North Carolina at Louisville, and at Miami are on the schedule. FSU could go 0-5, or 1-4 against that slate of teams. The defense has talent, but has underachieved in recent years. It ranked 90th in the country last season. If the offensive line resembles anything of the last few years, QB James Blackmen will be running for his life and without star Cam Akers in the backfield. A winning record would be a good goal for 2020.
