Miami
If any team in the ACC had a roller coaster season in 2019 it was the Miami Hurricanes. A 3-2 start after beating a good Virginia team gets undone after a disastrous home loss to a Georgia Tech that was 1-5 when they met. Then the Canes win three games in row over Pittsburgh, arch rival Florida State, and Louisville. At 6-4, Miami looked headed to a 8 or 9 win season, and then wheels came off. Losses to FIU, Duke, and the nightmare of getting shut out by Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl left Miami fans with questions about first year head coach Manny Diaz. The Canes have talent, but we keep waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting for them to cash in…
Will Go 8-3 (7-3) if:
The offensive line isn’t the total trainwreck of 2019. Miami’s offensive line gave up a whopping 51 sacks last season, and ranked 120th rushing the ball. If that group shows any semblance of improvement, it could do wonders for the Miami offense. Houston transfer QB D’Eriq King is an instant upgrade, and Brevin Jordan is the ACC’s best TE. The defense even with Gregory Rousseau opting out, should be really stingy. If Miami can get through the first seven games 5-2, or 6-1 they could win 8 maybe even 9 games.
Will Go 4-7 (4-6) if:
Miami starts the season 1-5 or 2-4. Other than UAB, the opening 6 games are not easy. There are road games at Clemson and Louisville. Florida State is a dangerous rival game. Pitt and Virginia are no pushovers. In their final 4 games, the Canes play at Virginia Tech and finish with North Carolina. If that offensive line isn’t better, it doesn’t matter who’s playing QB, the Miami offense is going to struggle. Miami’s top rusher and receiver are gone too. It’s simple for Miami. If the offensive line is adequate, they are top 25 team. If it looks like last season, Manny Diaz probably doesn’t make it to year 3 as Miami head coach.
