Virginia
Bronco Mendenhall took over an absolute mess at Virginia back in 2016 from BYU. Nobody doubted that Bronco could coach, but how would he fit in at Virginia? Could he turn things around in Charlottesville. The answer is clear – the fit has worked and he’s has Virginia on solid football ground. The Hoos have gone 17-10 (10-6) the last two years with a bowl win in 2018, and an Coastal Division Title and Orange Bowl appearance in 2019. They finally beat Virginia Tech too after more than a decade long losing streak. Star QB Bryce Perkins is gone, and that’s a big loss. That doesn’t mean Virginia isn’t going to still be a force in the ACC Coastal if Bronco has anything to say about it.
Will Go 7-3 (7-3) if:
Virginia can find a suitable replacement for QB Bryce Perkins. I’m not sure nationally many realized just how good QB Bryce Perkins was.. That’s more than 4,000 yards of offense in 2019 that Perkins leaves with. He was also Virginia’s top rusher. Virginia’s top 2 receivers are also gone in Joe Reed and Hasise Dubois. The Hoos are going to have rely on defense early. The linebackers and back 7 overall are strong. Clemson is the only game on the schedule that is probably beyond the Hoos chance of realistically winning. If Virginia can go 2-2 in the opening in their first 4 road games, the finishing stretch of the schedule is more manageable.
Will Go 3-7 (3-7) if:
The offense can’t replace all that offensive production. QBs Brennan Armstrong and Keytaon Thompson are competing for the starting job, and they need get up to speed quick, with road games right off the bat against Virginia Tech and Clemson. The schedule even with out Notre Dame is going to be a challenge. There’s road games at Miami, and Florida State. North Carolina and Louisville should be two of the better teams in the ACC as well. With all the early road games, a 1-6, 2-5 type start is possible, and I don’t think Virginia would recover from that.
