This was series I was going to work on in May, but the off-season started earlier than we wanted.

46. #21 Virginia Tech 31 #22 West Virginia 24 – September 3, 2017
All I could think when this game was over was how impressed I was by the poise of red-shirt freshman Josh Jackson in the 2nd half. In his first start and on national TV against a quality opponent he threw for 235 yards and ran for 101. The Hokies needed it too as West Virginia QB Will Grier was on fire most of the game. It was matchup of historical rivals that generated a great atmosphere at Fed Ex Field home of the Washington Redskins.
47. Georgia Tech 33 Kentucky 18 – December 31, 2016
Part of the ACC being the nation’s #1 football conference in 2016 was the 9-3 bowl record. Georgia Tech was part of that with a 33-18 win over Kentucky in the Tax Slayer Bowl. Georgia Tech was 3-0 against the SEC East in 2016, and had a fine 9-4 season. Following a 3-9 2015, it was nice comeback year for Paul Johnson and Georgia Tech culminated by this bowl victory.
48. Duke 38 Notre Dame 35 – September 24, 2016
Duke never got enough credit for walking into South Bend and leaving with a 38-35 win in front of 80,000 Irish fans. The win for Duke sent the Notre Dame season into a tailspin they never recovered from. The game became a what is wrong with Notre Dame when it should have been a referendum on how far the Duke program has risen under David Cutcliffe.
49. North Carolina 39 Cincinnati 17 – December 28, 2013
Larry Fedora’s biggest non conference win so far in his tenure at UNC was a 39 – 17 over Cincinnati in the 2013 Belk Bowl. In front of partisan crowd in Charlotte, NC, the Heels beat a Cincy team that finished the season 9-4. After a 1-5 start, the Tar Heels won 6 of their last 7 games capped off by this bowl victory.
50. Miami 45 Appalachian State 10 – September 17, 2016
Remember when Miami’s visit to Boone, NC was everybody’s upset special? Miami went to Appalachian State and ripped the Mountaineers 45-10. This was the first time I thought Mark Richt was really capable of making Miami relevant again. App State had just taken Tennessee to OT 2 weeks before. They went on to win 10 games and were the Sun Belt co-champions. Nationally this game got overlooked, but it was a very meaningful early victory in Richt’s Miami tenure.
