With the early signing day on December 18, more than 80% of a program’s class will get signed this Wednesday. Recruiting rankings aren’t the ultimate decider of how a team will do in the future, but if you don’t think they matter then you haven’t followed college football. The best teams far more often than not recruit the best. So which ACC teams made out and today and which ones have some serious work to do.
Rivals ACC Recruiting Rankings
Winners
Clemson – The Rich get Richer. Clemson signed the the consensus #1 class in college football. They were winning national titles with classes in the teens. How good are they going to be with the best class in the country? They signed a whopping 6 – Five Star players, and some are calling it the best defensive line class in history. Yea Clemson will be a playoff contender for a while.
Miami – Miami signed the 2nd best class in the ACC. Manny Diaz’s team struggled finishing the season on the field, but not on the recruiting trail. By either recruiting service Miami signed double digits Four Star players. RB Don Chaney was a top 40 National Recruit. This is the kind of class that Miami can build on.
UNC – Mack Brown and UNC signed all seven of their their committed 247 Four Star players today. DE Desmond Evans is the crown jewel class and just missed being a Five Star player. He’s from North Carolina, and for the Heels to hold onto an in-state player beating the likes of Clemson and Alabama was huge.
Georgia Tech – The Yellow Jackets signed their 2nd best class in history. The season was rough, but Geoff Collins put together a top 25 class that will be the foundation of future years. 5 247 Four Star players signed today including top 250 QB Jeff Simms. Georgia Tech’s offensive line is going to be much bigger in the next few years.
Florida State – For Florida State historically a class in the 20s wouldn’t be all that good, but with the transition in coaches from Wille Taggart to Mike Norvell it was a good finish. They got a Four-Star flip from QB Chubba Purdy who was committed to Louisville. Both recruiting services had at-least 8 Four-Star players signed for the Noles. With a full year to recruit, I expect the Noles to return to their customary top 15 spot in the recruiting rankings.
Losers
Virginia Tech – According to Rivals, the Hokies signed the worst class in the ACC. There was just 1 Four Star player – DE Alec Bryant. You can’t judge a class until they are on campus and actually playing, but on paper this isn’t what Virginia Tech fans were looking for.
Boston College – If you are going by 247 Sports, then Boston College was the lowest ranked class in the ACC. Only 1 Four-Star play signed with BC today, that was OL Ozzy Trapilo. I’m not sure how much ground they can make up by February too with the coaching transition going on.
