Good evening. Here are a few words about the status of Virginia Tech football:
- Paul Myerberg of USA Today nails it:
Since last October, the Hokies have lost to BC (twice!), to Notre Dame by 22, Georgia Tech by 21, Pitt by 30, Miami by 24 and now Duke by 35. This has basically been a bottom-tier P5 team since this point last year.

- Duke absolutely annihilated Virginia Tech . The worst home loss for Virginia Tech since 1974:
Duke 45, Tech 10. #Hokies‘ worst home loss since 49-12 to Houston in 1974. #longtime

- Virginia Tech is the most disappointing team in the ACC.
- Virginia Tech looked completely lost on offense and defense vs. Duke – and this is coming out of a multi-day bye (like almost two weeks). This is a team that looks completely unprepared on both sides of the ball (like many times this season)
- The greater majority of us did not expect a great season from Virginia Tech. Many of us expected a 8-4/7-5 ACC team – I’m on record for 8-4/7-5 – I did not have higher expectations than that. I knew the Hokies would have a young team. However, I did not expect the bottom to drop out. You have to be on the lookout for a potential 4-8/3-9 season. With the exception of Rhode Island (and maybe Georgia Tech), the Hokies will likely be underdogs in every game and might be chasing the 2018 Louisville team (take of that what you will).
- Fan apathy is at a very high level. This almost certainly will impact attendance and athletics department donations.
- I’m worried that Justin Fuente has lost the fan base (I hope Fuente hasn’t lost his team).
- Fuente – for sure – has one of the hottest coaching seats in America (h/t @CoachesHotSeat).
- Fuente’s buyout is $15 million (h/t @HeroSportsNews). I put this here for informational purposes only. I don’t think Virginia Tech will buyout Fuente – but I know people who read this post will be curious about it – so there you go.
That’s as succinct as I can be.
