Mack Brown’s debut game against South Carolina is a rousing success.

While Florida State and Willie Taggart melted down against and Boise State, and Virginia Tech and Justin Fuente couldn’t stop turning the ball over against BC here comes Mack Brown.

Those coaches needed opening weekend wins to inspire renewed confidence from their riled up fanbases. Mack Brown, though is the coach that has his fanbase just giddy after a 24-20 victory over South Carolina.

Critics of the Mack Brown hire said he was too old to coach again. That he couldn’t connect with the modern player anymore. All he’s done is get off to a great recruiting start, and now win Saturday’s opening game.

Under Larry Fedora, the Heels had become a team that couldn’t win a close game. They hardly won at all, with just 5 wins the last two years.

Down 20-9 in the 4th quarter, UNC had played decent enough. It looked like just another close for the Heels. It was nothing that would derail the season, though. It was a big rebuild job. It would take time.

Then UNC did exactly the opposite of FSU in the 2nd of half of their game. The Heels dug in. Freshman QB Sam Howell start making plays. The UNC receivers came up with big catches, and the defense stuffed South Carolina’s offense. They wore South Carolina down physically, running for well over 200 yards. They won the line of scrimmage late in the game when in counted.

The start to his 2nd UNC tenure couldn’t have went better. How UNC does going forward is anyone’s guess, but here is what I’m sure of. Sam Howell is going to be a start at quarterback. There are playmakers at wideout. Mack Brown has brought energy to Chapel Hill not seen since the 11-1 regular season of 2015, and even that season was marred by an opening loss to South Carolina.

It was emotional victory for Mack Brown who was on the verge of tears after the victory. There’s a new player in the ACC Coastal this year.
