ACC QUESTION of the WEEK : Who should be the NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 overall seed — Duke, Virginia, or another team?

I will keep this very short and simple, since we will be reviewing brackets on Sunday night and will have much more to say about ACC teams at that time.

Virginia should be the No. 1 overall seed. Gonzaga lost to Saint Mary’s. Duke lost two of three to North Carolina and also lost to Syracuse.

Virginia did not lose to a team worse than Florida State, which will be a 3 seed (maybe a 4, but likely a 3). The Cavaliers did the best job of not losing, and more specifically, of not losing to any team which was remotely mediocre. Duke did crush Kentucky in early November, but Virginia won the ACC, and I firmly believe that the long regular season should mean more than a one-week conference tournament in determining seeding questions if there is a noticeable disparity between any two teams.

Virginia obviously wasn’t better than Duke in a head-to-head matchup, but UVA had the better regular season on a larger level. If Duke had not lost to Syracuse at home, this conversation would certainly be different.
