Five things I don’t like about the 2019 ACC football schedule.

The 2019 ACC Football schedule was released a few days ago, and I’ve had a chance to look it over. Let me tell you 5 things I like about the schedule. Here are the 5 things I liked about the schedule.

1) Florida State vs Boise State on 8/31/19

I don’t understand why FSU scheduled this game when they were a top 20 program,  and it definitely looks like a bad idea now that the Noles are simply just not very good. Boise State lives for these kinds of games, and wins more than their fair of share them. If you beat Boise State you gain little. Boise State can certainly defeat the Noles and send FSU’s season spiraling out of control. There’s little reason to schedule a game like this.

2) Opening Week ACC/SEC matchups

UNC vs South Carolina, Duke vs Alabama, and Miami vs Florida. How many wins do you see there? I don’t see a one where the ACC team will be favored.  I’m all for non-conference matchups, but Duke is not equipped to challenge Alabama. UNC is coming off a 2 win year, and Miami just changed coaches. Let the narrative begin.

3) NC State Saturday Home Games

On September 21 NC State plays Ball State at home. That is the last Saturday home game for NC State until November 9. That’s 7 weeks without a home Saturday game. So much for fall October Saturday home games in Raleigh.

4) NC State and Wake Forest Bye Weeks

Why are NC State and Wake Forest getting both of their BYE weeks in October and only a couple of weeks apart. At the very least they should have 3 games between their two BYES. That kind of defeats the point of the double bye for those two schools

5) 12 Thursday/Friday Night Games

I don’t have a problem with the ACC scheduling Thursday and Friday night games, but 12 of them?! Isn’t that a bit much? Not only are weeknight games hard to attend, but the Friday games interfere with high school football. Thursday isn’t an exclusive window anymore, as those games are opposite NFL games now. The ACC needs to reduce these games by at least 4 or 5 games.

    1. My only concern is giving up home field advantage, though I’m sure FSU felt like they got a good paycheck from it.

    2. Miami SHOULD play Florida. UNC SHOULD play S. Carolina. Unfortunate that both have new coaches. I agree on Duke – no reason to play Alabama (except money).

3 and 4. I agree – NC State’s schedule is less than optimal!

    5. The ACC Network needs THU/FRI games – I get that. However, I’ve never been a huge fan of putting the best teams on those nights – let Clemson, FSU, Miami compete for air time on Saturday night instead.
