Best and Worst case record for Virginia Tech football in 2018

Best / Worse Case Record for :

Louisville | Virginia | Miami | Duke | Georgia Tech | Boston College | Pittsburgh | Florida State | NC State | ClemsonSyracuse | North Carolina | Wake Forest

Virginia Tech
Justin Fuente in his 2 years at Virginia Tech has been everything Hokie fans could have hoped for. Fuente is averaging 9.5 wins a season as Hokie coach, and there is nothing to suggest that Fuente isn’t well on his way to turning Virginia Tech into a program that may make a playoff run at some point in the next few seasons. Bud Foster is still one of the best defensive coordinators in the land. The last 7 Hokie opponents in 2017, failed to break the 14 point barrier. That included 3 shutouts. Frank Beamer made Virginia Tech a national power. Justin Fuente seems on the verge getting Virginia Tech there again.

Will Go 11-1 (7-1) if:
Bud Foster can figure out how to rebuild a defense that will be replacing more than half it’s starters from the previous year. The back 7 will be be especially young and inexperienced. The Hokies get a huge test right out of the gate with a game at Florida State. If the Hokies can survive that game, the schedule opens up with games against William & Mary, East Carolina, and at Old Dominion. Then that defense could be good to go for the rest of the year.

Josh Jackson had a fine freshman year at QB, but struggled a bit towards the end of the season. If he can remain consistent over the entire year, the Hokie offense will be very dangerous. Most of Virginia Tech’s toughest games (Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Boston College and Miami) are at home. They can certainly win everyone of those.

Will Go 8-4 (5-3) if:
That defense doesn’t mature quickly. No defense under Bud Foster will ever be bad, but if an average defense is combined with a QB Josh Jackson that doesn’t take another step the Hokies could slip up in several games. Florida State is a difficult opener, and road games against Duke and Pittsburgh are dangerous. The Hokies could lose 2 possibly 3 of those.

Add a home loss or two from the games against Notre Dame, Miami, BC, and Georgia Tech and the Hokies could be looking at an 8-4 season pretty quickly. The running game has to show some improvement this year or the offense could be limited.
