Pittsburgh’s Five best Out of Conference Football wins of the 2010s through 2017

Recently we reviewed the ACC’s best 25 OOC wins of the decade so far.  Some really good wins got left off the list, so I decided for a little off-season reading to give you the best five OOC wins for each ACC team so far this decade

Virginia Tech | Georgia Tech | Duke | UNC | Virginia | Miami | Louisville | Clemson | Wake Forest | Florida State | Boston College | Syracuse | NC State

1. Pittsburgh 42 Penn State 39 – September 10, 2016 (#19 on ACC Top 25 OOC Win List of Decade)

At the time this Pittsburgh win over Penn State looked like a nice rivalry win, and not that much else. As the year progressed it became one of the best non-conference wins of the 2016 season. Penn State went on to win the Big 10 Championship and just miss the playoffs, but they couldn’t beat the Pittsburgh Panthers. Pitt RB James Conner had 117 yards on the ground.

2. Pittsburgh 28 #24 Notre Dame 21 – November 9, 2013

The biggest highlight of an uneven Paul Chryst tenure at Pittsburgh was a 28 – 21 win against ranked Notre Dame. This was a Notre Dame team that ended the season 9-4 and ranked in the top 25. James Conner had 2 TD runs in the big win.

3. Pittsburgh 35 #13 Virginia Tech 17 – September 15, 2012 (Not ACC Member)

In 2012 Pittsburgh was not yet a member of the ACC so the Panther’s victory over Virginia Tech was of the out of conference variety and it was a big one. The Hokies were the class of the ACC back then, and Panthers proved they ready to join the conference the next year by knocking off one of the better ACC programs at the time.

4. Pittsburgh 27 Kentucky 10 – January 8 , 2011 (Not ACC Member)

The last Pittsburgh bowl victory over a Power 5 team was January 8, 2011 when Pittsburgh beat SEC member Kentucky 27-10 BBVA Compass Bowl. Future NFLer Dion Lewis had  105 yards rushing. Pittsburgh quietly had a nice 8-5 season winning 6 of their last 8 games.

5. Pittsburgh 30 Bowling Green 27 – December 26, 2013

Pittsburgh finished their first year in the ACC with a Little Ceasars Bowl victory over Bowling Green. Two of the Pitt best players of the decade had huge games. James Conner ran for 229 yards, and Tyler Boyd had 173 yards receiving.
