Virginia’s Five best Out of Conference Football wins of the 2010s through 2017

Recently we reviewed the ACC’s best 25 OOC wins of the decade so far.  Some really good wins got left off the list, so I decided for a little off-season reading to give you the best five OOC wins for each ACC team so far this decade

Virginia Tech | Georgia Tech | Duke | UNC | Miami | Pittsburgh | Louisville | Clemson | Wake Forest | Florida State | Boston College | Syracuse | NC State

1. Virginia 42 Boise State 23 – September 22, 2017

Winning at Boise State is not easy. Boise State lives to beat Power 5 schools. That did not happen on this day. Virginia played one their best games in years in wiping out the Broncos 42-23. It helped Virginia to a 5-1 start, and it was Bronco Mendenhall’s first signature win at Virginia.

2. Virginia 17 Penn State 16 – September 8, 2012

Virginia finished 4-8 in 2012, but they pulled off a stunner back in 2012 beating Penn State 17 – 16. This Penn State team went 8-4 and 6-2 in the Big 10. It was Mike London’s biggest win during his tenure at Virginia. At a time when the ACC was desperate for quality OOC wins, this quietly one of the better ones of the early 2010s.

3. Virginia 19 BYU 16 – August 31, 2013

It was another rough season for Virginia in 2013 as they went 2-10, but their 19-16 win over BYU was a standout one. This BYU team went 8-5 and was coached by future Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall. In an otherwise dismal year, this was a definite highlight.

4. Virginia 49 Central Michigan 35 – September 24, 2016

The first three wins on this list are definitely of the quality variety. After that it became thin pickings. A 2-10 Virginia team did pick up a win in 2016 over a bowl bound Central Michigan team. Central Michigan was 3-0 with a victory over Oklahoma State when the Cavaliers knocked them off.

5. Virginia 34 Indiana 31 – September 10, 2011

I’m not sure a win over a 1-11 Indiana should really be on this list, but something had to take the 5th spot. It was a Power 5 road win so there’s that.

    1. Only 3 big OOC wins (only 1 P5) in 8 years is not great.
    2. Same pattern for the top 3: UVa upset a pretty good but not great team which was overlooking them.

Yep not a strong list, but better than UNC which was the worst so far.
