With Notre Dame’s recent title in Women’s Basketball, the ACC became the only conference with national titles all 4 major sports (Football, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, and Baseball) since 2013. That’s a significant accomplishment for a conference that won only 2 from 2006-2012.
Those were the men’s basketball titles of UNC – 2009, and Duke -2010.
The ACC also leads all conferences with 6 title in these 4 sports. The SEC and AAC (led by UCONN women’s basketball with 4) are second with 5 national titles. The Big 10, Pac 12, and Big 12 have a together 2 national titles in this time, and none since 2014. One can argue the ACC is the biggest conference at 15 teams in these sports other football, but I will counter that with there are 36 teams in the Big 10, Pac 12, and Big 12 across 3 different regions and the ACC has 3 times as many titles as those 3 conferences combined. The Big 12 can’t be thrilled that the Big South has more titles than they do as well 1 – 0. Ouch!
This speaks to the balance of the conference across the major sports. If you are playing in the ACC you are competing at a nationally elite level. We wrote the last year about the ACC being in the middle of a golden age of their major sports. This golden age certainly shows no signs of slowing down.
The number of teams appearing in national title games, without winning the title is noteworthy too.
Football – Clemson 2015
Men’s Basketball – UNC 2016
Women’s Basketball – Notre Dame 2014 and 2015, Syracuse 2016
Baseball – Virginia 2014
That’s a national title participant in 12 of the last 22 national title games. It’s a very impressive run indeed for the conference.
