Pittsburgh
Last year you saw the potential of the Pittsburgh program. Very few schools had a better pair of wins than the Panthers had with wins over Penn State and Clemson. 4 of the 5 Panther losses were by 7 points or less. The offense was dynamic last year but will be without it’s starting QB, RB and OC Matt Canada in 2017. Pat Narduzzi is a well respected coach, and in his third year at Pitt do the Panthers take the next step to top 25 team?
Will Go 9-3 (6-2) if:
Offensive pieces like RB James Conner and QB Nathan Peterman can be adequately replaced. The defense, especially the secondary wasn’t bad it was atrocious. The defense against the pass was ranked an unsightly 127th in the country. It can’t possibly be worse. The schedule is a tough one – there’s no question about that. There are OOC games with Penn State and Oklahoma State, but Pitt is capable of splitting the pair. They do avoid Clemson, FSU and Louisville and get NC State and Miami at home.
If everything breaks right, Pitt could be a Coastal contender.
Will Go 5-7 (3-5) if:
The schedule overwhelms Pitt. At Penn State, Oklahoma State, At Georgia Tech back to back to back could lead to a 1-3 start. NC State, at Virginia Tech and Miami to end the season is another really tough stretch. Throw in another loss or two elsewhere and Pitt could easily be looking at 6 or 7 losses. The defense was so bad last year, and if it struggles anywhere close this year the offense probably won’t be able to carry Pitt like it did last year. There are just too many pieces missing on offense to expect nearly 41 points a game again.
