Ranking the 5 best Quarterbacks in the ACC for 2014.

Winston

You know you’ve been waiting for it. With the college football season just  2 1/2 months away, it’s time to start looking at the ACC position rankings for 2014. Quarterbacks, Running Backs…. to Linebackers, Defensive Backs and special teamers. We are starting with the ACC quarterbacks, and to be honest it’s not that deep a group. There’s plenty of potential, but that’s we what have mostly in the ACC at quarterback this season potential.

Previous and Upcoming Rankings

Running Backs | Wide Receivers | Offensive Linemen | Tight Ends | Defensive Linemen | Linebackers | Cornerbacks | Safeties | Special Teams

1) Jameis Winston, Florida State

There is absolutely no doubt to who is the number one returning quarterback is the the ACC for 2014. It’s the quarterback of the National Champion Florida State Seminoles and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston. Winston threw for over 4000 yards last and 40 TDs, in a brilliant 2013 season. What I like most about Winston, is he never gets rattled. His poise is amazing. He wasn’t fazed at Clemson in a top 5 matchup. After a bit of slow start in the BCS Title game, he led the Seminoles on a game winning final drive against the Auburn Tigers. Another Heisman trophy is not out of the question for Winston in 2014.

2) Anthony Boone, Duke

It’s a total crapshoot at quarterback in the ACC after Winston. I’m going with Anthony Boone at Duke. There were even whispers of a QB competition between Boone and Brandon Connette before Connette transferred from Duke, but I like where  Boone is headed. He helped lead to Duke to one of their best season’s in history in their 10-4 Coastal Division winning 2013. He nearly went throw for throw with Texas A&M’s Jonny Manziel with a 427 yard 4 TD performance in the near Blue Devil win in the Chick Fil A Bowl. Under the tutelege of Duke coach and quarterback guru David Cutcliffe I expect Boone to be even better this year.

3) Marquise Williams, North Carolina

Marquise Williams came on in the middle of last year to guide North Carolina to a 4-1 finish to the season. Williams has future star written all over him. He has dual threat ability throwing for nearly 1700 yards last season, and running for 536 yards. If Williams keeps developing, the Tar Heels high octane  offense should be very good.

4) Terrel Hunt, Syracuse

If you’ve read the blog in the past, you know I’ll normally give the edge to an experienced player versus an incoming new one. With Terrel Hunt at Syracuse there are signs of a solid quaterback in the making. As a runner and passer he combined for over 2100 total yards, had better than 60% completion rate. He was named Texas Bowl MVP, and was the Orange’s 2013 MVP as well. Hunt played better as the season continued, and I expect he will continue to improve this year.

5) Will Gardner, Louisville

Some might question Will Gardner on this list at number 5, but let me ask who else can you definitively put here? Gardner was the backup at Louisville behind Teddy Bridgewater. He was a top 50 quarterback coming out of High School, and was 32 for 37 for 542 yards in Louisville spring game. At 6’5 226, he has good size for quarterback. Bobby Petrino really likes Gardner, and Petrino knows his quarterbacks. Going into the season, that’s good enough for me.
