This will be a short post, but something has caught my eye with the events of the last few months. When you think of the top athletics program in the ACC, it’s hard to argue that Florida State isn’t leading the way.
The Seminoles won a national title in football. Their women’s softball team has made the softball college world series. Seminole baseball is likely to be a top 8 national seed, and their outdoor men’s and women’s track and field teams won ACC Championships. So who’s been arguably the 2nd best ACC athletics program in the last several months?
Virginia typically is very strong in the Olympic sports, and they won ACC Titles in Men’s and Women’s tennis. Their basketball team went to the the sweet 16, and the Cavalier baseball team like FSU should be a national seed. I think I might have to give the edge though to someone else. That someone is the Duke Blue Devils.
This is an athletic program that is looking as well rounded as just about anyone in the ACC not named Florida State. The football team won the ACC Coastal Division and finished ranked in the top 25. The basketball despite a poor NCAA tournament, spent most of the year ranked in the top 10. The baseball team might make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1961. The men’s lacrosse team made their version of the Final 4 and could win a national title. National Titles get bonus points too, and Duke just won a national title in women’s golf.
What you have to like about what Duke athletics has done is not only have they remained strong in sports they have been traditionally strong at like lacrosse, they’ve improved immensely at sports like football and baseball in the last few years.
