ACC Bowl Projections for 11/11/2012

I think we are sufficiently close to the bowl season to start looking at where the ACC Bowl teams could end up. It was actually a pretty good weekend for the ACC. At one time it looked the ACC might only get 5 teams bowl eligible, but Georgia Tech’s recent surge might give the ACC another bowl team.

Clemson and Florida State continue to eye BCS bowl games. We still don’t know what Miami will do if the get bowl eligible, but let’s assume they do the sensible thing and not self impose a bowl ban.

We’ll go with College Football New”s prediction on the Military Bowl, since it doesn’t look like the ACC will get 8 bowl eligible teams.

Military
Washington, DC RFK Stadium
Dec. 27, 3:00 pm, ESPN
Army vs. ACC No. 8

Projection: Bowling Green* vs. Utah State*
*Army and ACC not projected available

Belk
Charlotte, NC Bank of America Stadium
Dec. 27, 6:30 pm, ESPN
ACC No. 5 vs. Big East No. 3

Projection: Duke vs. Cincinnati

The Belk has made it known, if Duke is available they are taking them, and why not? The Blue Devils first bowl game in nearly 20 years. I would expect a solid Blue Devil fan turnout.

AdvoCare V100 Independence
Shreveport, LA Independence Stadium
Dec. 28, 2:00 pm, ESPN
ACC No. 7 vs. SEC

Projection:  Wake Forest  vs. Louisiana-Lafayette*

Wake Forest at 5-5 has to win one more game to get bowl eligible. A win at Notre Dame doesn’t seem likely, but neither does a win against a decent Vanderbilt team. Wake Forest does get them at home though while Vanderbilt comes off a rivalry game with Tennessee. ULL looks like a good choice to sell some tickets.

Russell Athletic
Orlando, FL Florida Citrus Bowl
Dec. 28, 5:30 pm, ESPN
Big East No. 2 vs. ACC No. 3

Projection: Rutgers vs. Miami

The loser of the Rutgers/Louisville game ends up here facing Miami. The Russell Athletic Bowl with a buffet of 6-6 teams to choose from will pick the closest one, and that’s Miami.

Franklin American Mortgage Music City
Nashville, TN LP Field
Dec. 31, 12:00 pm, ESPN
SEC No. 7 vs. ACC No. 6

Projection: Mississippi vs. Georgia Tech

An old-time SEC matchup here with Mississippi and Georgia Tech. Both are fairly close to Nashville, I think the Music City Bowl would like this game. The Yellow Jackets still need 1 more win to get in.

Hyundai Sun
El Paso, TX Sun Bowl
Dec. 31, 2:00 pm, CBS
ACC No. 4 vs. Pac-12 No. 4

Projection: Virginia Tech vs Arizona

You have to wonder how many Hokie fans make this trip in their most disappointing season in some 20 years. Sun hasn’t had Virginia Tech recently and there’s some name recognition there.

Chick-fil-A
Atlanta, GA Georgia Dome
Dec. 31, 7:30 pm, ESPN
ACC No. 2 vs. SEC No. 5

Projection: NC State vs. Mississippi St.

The Chick-fil-A’s sold out streak may be threatened by this matchup of teams that at one point or another this season were really overrated. You know the Chick-fil-A is hoping somehow Clemson is available here.

Discover Orange
January 1st, 8:30 pm, ESPN
Miami Gardens, FL Sun Life Stadium
ACC No. 1 vs. BCS At-Large

Projection: Florida State vs. Lousiville

Florida State has been waiting since 2005 to get back to the Orange Bowl. Louisville should travel well, but it’s still a no win situation for FSU. At this point you’re supposed to get there and not lose to the Big East Champs.

Allstate Sugar
January 2nd, 8:30 pm, ESPN
New Orleans, LA Mercedes-Benz Superdome
SEC No. 1 vs. BCS At-Large

Projection: Alabama vs. Clemson

Remember last year when the Sugar Bowl had ticket sale issues? Alabama and Clemson should sell out in about 3 seconds. Clemson only gets here by winning out though. At 11-1 with their only loss to a top 10 ranked FSU team, and a season ending 8 game winning streak the Sugar will be hard pressed to pass them up. Lose to South Carolina and it’s Chick-Fil-A bound.
